Vladimir Putin is hopeful following negotiations with the United States regarding a potential ceasefire in Ukraine.

The president of Russia has stated that the initial round of discussions, which took place in Saudi Arabia, provides the groundwork that is required for the parties to cooperate in the future.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said the first meetings and discussions with the Trump administration have "inspired a certain degree of hope." This is his most optimistic comment yet since the commencement of US-Russia talks in a bid to end the war in Ukraine. The statements made by Putin came at a time when diplomats from Russia and the United States met in Istanbul on Thursday. They held talks on the detailed terms and conditions regarding the possible resumption of diplomatic ties, which were cut off as a direct result of his move to launch a full-scale invasion of Ukraine three years ago.

There is a common and mutual desire of the parties to effectively work together towards the restoration of intergovernmental relations, which have been disrupted, and to fully work out the large and wide range of accumulated systemic and strategic problems that are present within the global architecture. These issues have not only initiated the current crisis in Ukraine but have also been a contributing factor to the rise of other regional conflicts," Putin stated at a meeting with the leadership of the FSB intelligence agency. His comments are timely since US President Donald Trump has adopted many of the Kremlin's views, opposing Ukraine and its European allies against Russia at the UN and in the G7 for calling Russia the aggressor.

The initial round of discussions between the United States and Russia, which took place in Saudi Arabia last week, effectively "cleared the path for further co-operation." The landmark discussions focused on several key areas, such as the potential reopening of economic ties severed after the western sanctions were imposed. Furthermore, the talks were aimed at resuming the operations of their respective embassies and establishing working groups that would negotiate and prepare the terms for a potential ceasefire in the ongoing war in Ukraine.
